The FBI says it is investigating a cybercriminal group's claim that it compromised the bureau's job-application website and accessed employee personal information.
The FBI says a cybercriminal group is claiming to have broken into fbijobs.gov, the bureau’s online hiring portal, and gained access to personally identifiable information (PII), data like names, addresses, or other details that can identify a specific person, belonging to FBI employees.
According to the FBI, it is not yet clear where the breach occurred, whether through a third-party company that helps run the site or through the FBI’s own systems. The bureau says it is actively investigating the matter and working with the outside providers that support fbijobs.gov to reduce any risk to those affected.
The FBI stated, “we are actively and aggressively investigating this matter and working closely with those third-party providers that support fbijobs.gov to mitigate any and all risk.”
For everyday readers, the incident is a reminder that even government hiring websites, which collect sensitive personal and employment details from applicants and staff, can be targeted by criminal groups. When PII is exposed, it can potentially be used for identity theft or targeted scams against the people whose information was taken.
The FBI has not yet confirmed the extent of the alleged breach or how many people may be affected. The bureau’s statement focuses on its ongoing investigation rather than specific guidance for the public at this time.
